virtualization solutions - ThinLinc

One of the main ideas behind the development of ThinLinc was to create a flexible architecture to fit the different requirements enterprises have. Today ThinLinc can be used alongside existing systems to allow for a gradual integration or migration to a new operating system environment.

ThinLinc allows to further consolidate server parks in order to reduce costs. By centralizing servers using ThinLinc, other opportunities for cutting expenditures are opened, e.g. through reduced need for on-site support for local servers, but also by offering employees a more generalized workplace through thin client technology.

Virtualization Solutions Architecture.

The architecture is flexible enough to handle large organizations with "autonomous" office applications or functions, while maintaining manageability and security. A ThinLinc system can be supplemented with automated installation, configuration and administration of the client hardware. Varoius measures such as the support of different administrative groups provide both ease of administration and the flexibility to adapt to specific needs.

ThinLinc is flexible

ThinLinc can easily be integrated with existing IT environments, no matter if it's based on software from Microsoft, Novell or other vendors.

ThinLinc provides and additional access layer to the existing IT platforms without affecting the existing infrastructure. This makes it easy to introduce and also supports to migrate step by step migrate if needed. It's also easy to tailor ThinLinc to specific needs. The idea is that ThinLinc is adapted to the work methods instead of the other way around.

Step-by-step migration

Through the flexible architecture of ThinLinc, it's possible to use a whole new method of introducing the product to the organization, where design and implementation is geared towards a specific user group. By making the adaptations in the product rather than at the user end, it's possible to make the introduction quicker and more efficient.

An efficient organization enables an incremental and parallell design and implementation of ThinLinc in each separate department, with their specific requirements and wishes in mind.

In this way the system can be introduced in a shorter time and in a more efficient way and take into account the different preconditions within the organization. ThinLinc can also be more quickly adapted to the introduction of new methods or tools, since these can be introduced in those places in the organization where they are needed the most.

Easy to adapt

ThinLinc is based on Open Source software. This means that ThinLinc is easy to adapt to specific requirements or demands of the organization. The idea is that the users shouldn't have to change the way they work just because new technology is introduced.

However, it's possible to tailor the tools to the needs and competence of each individual work group through the linux based workspace.

There are also possibilities for making the working methods more efficient by smart solutions for terminal emulations or tools for program development.

Easy to integrate and work with

ThinLinc has a lot of features and can be used for many purposes and in many environments. We've tried to write some short texts on some of the different features available in ThinLinc. Read about them below.

ThinLinc is secure

ThinLinc secures your data and keeps your computing environment available all the time!

ThinLinc is built to make secure systems. This is accomplished on several levels. The communication between the workstation and the server is secured against tapping, and encrypted. The server system is built for high availability and zero down-time. The centralization of applications simplifies security upgrades and virus protection as this can be managed in one place.

Using directory services to authenticate user groups or individual users, the flow of information within and outside the organization can be secured to reduce the risk of leakage. ThinLinc supports the majority of the existing directory services.

Secure communication

ThinLinc uses OpenSSH to secure the communication between client computer and server. Instead of using IPSEC, which can be difficult to configure and can cause problems in the network, SSH creates a tunnel around the regular protocol and thereby encypts the content. In the SSH protocol there is built-in protection against tapping, which makes "Man-in-the-Middle" attacks impossible. OpenSSH supports a large number of encryption algorithms, with up to 256 bit encryption.

Availability

An important aspect of security pertains to availability. ThinLinc can be connected to form different kinds of clusters. The most common example is load balancing, where two or more servers are configured for optimal useage. Another example is a high availability cluster, where a backup machine takes over if the main server fails, to ensure the continued operation.

Sessions

Thanks to the session management in ThinLinc you are ensured against losing work if a workstation fails or the connection to the server is lost. Next time the user logs on, the work is still there, ready to be resumed, saved in the session on the server.
